Founded 6th in the mission chain on June 26, 1776. San Francisco de Asís (named for Saint Francis of Assisi) is also referred to as Mission Dolores after the nearby Nuestra Señora de los Dolores (Our Lady of Sorrows) stream and river.
Great for introducing students to California's mission history and emphasizing the importance of the missions to the founding of California (1769 to 1823).
